What Causes Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?

Spider veins are tiny, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. They often have a web or branch-like shape, which is how they got their name!

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that often bulge out from under the skin’s surface. They frequently occur on the legs and ankles.

Both spider and varicose veins are caused by damaged, weakened blood vessels that have trouble circulating blood properly against gravity. This causes blood to pool in the veins, enlarging and twisting them.

Factors that can increase your risk for developing spider or varicose veins include:

  • Age – veins lose elasticity over time
  • Gender – females have up to 3x higher risk
  • Genetics – family history
  • Pregnancy – increased blood volume strains veins
  • Weight – excess weight presses on veins
  • Lack of movement – blood pools when standing/sitting for long periods
  • Prior vein injury or blood clots

While spider veins are not directly dangerous on their own, they can cause aching, throbbing, muscle fatigue, and heaviness or swelling in the legs. Their unsightly appearance can also take an emotional toll.

Home Remedies to Improve Spider Veins

Before considering medical procedures, there are some simple home remedies you can try to relieve discomfort from spider veins and improve their appearance.

These include:

  1. Applying cool compresses to affected areas to reduce swelling and inflammation.
  2. Massaging legs daily to help boost circulation. Use downward strokes toward the heart.
  3. Doing regular exercise to improve circulation, strengthen muscles that support veins.
  4. Avoiding prolonged standing/sitting, crossing legs, wearing tight clothing.
  5. Elevating legs above heart level whenever possible to improve blood flow.
  6. Maintaining healthy weight to avoid excess pressure on veins.
  7. Eating a diet rich in circulation-boosting nutrients like vitamins C, B6, E.
  8. Applying topical creams containing horse chestnut extract or vitamin K. Research shows these can slightly improve spider vein appearance when used diligently over time.

However, while home remedies may provide some symptom relief, they cannot eliminate spider veins or prevent new ones from developing. For satisfactory removal of embarrassing broken capillaries, medical treatment is recommended.

At Vein Center Doctor, we specialize in state-of-the-art, minimally invasive spider vein treatments that provide excellent cosmetic results without extensive downtime. Our services  include:

1. Sclerotherapy

One of the most effective and popular treatments we offer for eliminating spider veins is sclerotherapy. This minimally invasive procedure has been used for decades to remove spider veins and improve the appearance of legs and faces.

During sclerotherapy, our vein specialist will inject a specially formulated saline solution called a sclerosing agent directly into your unwanted spider veins. The solution irritates and scars the lining of the vein, causing it to close up and collapse. Over several weeks, your body naturally absorbs the treated veins and they gradually fade away.

Sclerotherapy provides rapid results with minimal recovery time. Most patients need 2-5 treatment sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart to achieve optimal spider vein removal. The procedure takes about 30 minutes per treatment session, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

2. Radiofrequency Ablation

Another advanced treatment option our vein clinic offers is radiofrequency ablation (RFA). This technology allows us to treat spider veins using heat delivered from inside the vein.

RFA uses ultrasound imaging to guide placement of a thin catheter into the diseased vein through a small incision. The tip of the catheter heats up, causing the vein wall to collapse and seal shut so blood can no longer flow through. Over time, the vein gets reabsorbed.

The procedure is done using local anesthesia and takes less than an hour. Most patients report little pain and recover fully within a week. A big perk of RFA is that no needles have to puncture the skin, so there is very minimal bruising or risk of infection.

A study shows RFA seals off spider veins successfully in 90% of cases in conjunction with sclerotherapy. It is most effective for eliminating larger varicose veins, but can treat smaller spider veins as well. Ask our specialist if RFA is right for your specific vein issues.

3. VenaSeal

The latest innovation our team uses for sealing off damaged veins is called VenaSeal. This revolutionary technique is similar to RFA but uses a medical superglue rather than heat.

Tiny catheter is inserted into the diseased vein, and medical adhesive is injected along the entire length of the vessel. This causes the vein to seal off permanently. Blood flow is redirected to healthy veins.

Because no needles or thermal heat are used, the treatment is virtually painless. There is no need for cumbersome compression stockings afterward. Normal activity can be resumed the next day.

VenaSeal takes only 30 minutes to perform in our office and closes spider veins with 95% efficacy after one session. It is an excellent choice for those wishing to avoid needles, heat, downtime. Ask our specialist if VenaSeal is appropriate for you.

4. Venous Compression Therapy

Compression therapy is often recommended as part of a treatment plan for varicose veins. It works by applying gentle pressure to the legs to help improve blood flow and reduce swelling.

There are several types of compression stockings that may be prescribed:

  • Gradient compression stockings provide the most pressure at the ankles, with gradually decreasing pressure up the leg. These are frequently prescribed for varicose veins.
  • Anti-embolism stockings provide uniform compression. These may be used post-surgery to help prevent blood clots.
  • Circular knit stockings provide light to moderate compression. These are sometimes recommended for mild varicose veins.

Wearing compression stockings helps push blood up from the legs back toward the heart. This improves overall circulation and reduces pressure on the veins. As a result, compression therapy can relieve achiness, swelling, and discomfort caused by varicose veins.

What to Expect: Recovery & Results After Spider Vein Treatment

The recovery process and timeline can vary slightly depending on what treatment you undergo. But in general:

1Discomfort is mild and manageable with OTC pain medication
2Bruising or redness may be present and resolves within 1-2 weeks
3Compression stockings may be worn for 1-2 weeks to aid healing
4Normal activity can usually be resumed within 1-3 days
5More physically demanding activities may need 1 week rest
6Full effects are seen in 3 weeks as treated veins fade away
7Optimal results often require 2-5 treatments over several weeks
8Treated veins are unlikely to return if your vein specialist addresses the underlying causes

Follow our vein specialists’ post-procedure instructions carefully. Avoid hot baths, massages, or activities that put pressure on treated veins for at least 2 weeks. Elevate legs when possible. Stay well hydrated and walk regularly to boost circulation.

Schedule any follow-up appointments as directed so we can check your progress and determine if additional treatments are indicated. We want you looking and feeling your absolute best!

What To Do If Bleeding Occurs After Spider Vein Treatment

Excessive bleeding is uncommon after properly performed spider vein procedures. But if bleeding does occur, remain calm and follow these steps:

  • Apply firm, direct pressure to the site with clean gauze or cloth for 10-15 minutes. This will often stop minor bleeding.
  • Elevate your leg above heart level to reduce blood pressure in veins and promote clotting.
  • Loosen any bandages that may be constricting blood flow.
  • Scale back activity to avoid agitating the area. Rest your leg.
  • If bleeding persists beyond a small spot, contact our office or seek urgent care. Further treatment may be needed to seal the vessel.

While moderately bothersome, post-treatment bleeding is not dangerous. But do not hesitate to call us if you have any concerns. Catching it early helps prevent larger subcutaneous hematomas from forming.
